Before attending the Global Atheist Convention, I would have thought "Yes, surely atheists can face death". But after hearing Sam Harris, I'm not so sure.
And the reigning champion slides sideways in the ring, leaving his opponent looking flat footed. And then with some short jabs to the head the champ forces the challenger to lift his fists and so expose his body. Again the champ pivots in, even more gracefully, and lands deep body blows that leave the challenger hurt and struggling. But the challenger is unable to leave the ring. This is mortal combat and the gloves are off.
What does it mean to be human? This is a profound question and the answer has huge implications. Are human beings a mere biological accident in a vast cosmological accident? Are human beings the creative product of a divine mind? Or are they something else entirely?
One of the things that probably doesn’t get a lot of airtime is that at Christmas Christians celebrate not only Jesus’ birthday but more specifically the day that God himself became human.
If we can ground our preferences in notions of what makes marriage good or bad, then I think we'll have gone a long way to making the most of this opportunity.
A problem faces any secular person interested in morality: How do we find a system of morality that is objective, which we can all agree on? One that is not beholden to any religious tradition, and that does not require us to embrace moral relativism? Can we be scientific in our choice of morality?
