Indonesia's first supermodel gets her self confidence from something outside of herself

Tracy Trinita is a quintessential exotic beauty, the child of an Indonesian mother and Brazilian father. But at school in Bali, she felt like an ugly duckling; other students laughed at her and called her "giraffe" because of her height.

When Tracy was 14 years old, her mother entered her into a modelling competition, thinking it would boost her confidence.

Over the next year, Tracy won three modelling competitions, culminating in 1995 when she became the first Indonesian model to win the Elite Model Look International competition, a coup that changed her life overnight...

Jesus on trial - expert opinion

Paul Whitfield's blog

City Bible Forum called Professor Edwin Judge as expert witness who submitted this paper ahead of the trial

WHERE IS THE HISTORY OF JESUS?

This article was the last of a series on ‘Jesus, the Man’ in The Australian newspaper. It appeared on Christmas Eve, 1968.

Where is the history of Jesus?

The four Gospels were not designed to answer all the questions that a modern historian or biographer likes to ask. As their name implies, they are a written statement of the gospel itself, that is, of the news that the apostles had to announce.

Jesus on trial - a police officer's perspective

Paul Whitfield's blog

What might a police officer make of the testimony about Jesus' resurrection?

Hearing Jesus on talk back radio I listened with intrigue at how some people claim that differing witness accounts from the disciples within the Bible cause them to doubt that the resurrection actually took place.

Angelina Jolie's movie 'Unbroken' traces the Olympic achievements and wartime hardships of Louis Zamperini

Angeline Jolie's recent movie 'Unbroken' tells the incredible story of Louis Zamperini, a former Olympian who survived 47 days at sea and more than 2 years as a prisoner of war.

After the war Louis experienced post-traumatic stress. He became an alcoholic and abusive, saw flashbacks and dreamt every night of strangling the man who had tormented him most. Louis became obsessed with revenge and started planning murder. In Louis' words, 'It was as if the war was still going on in my head.'

You've got to have faith

Paul Whitfield's blog

What is faith and why is it necessary?

Last year I celebrated 11 years of marriage. What I’ve learned over those years is that trust is an indispensable part of every relationship. In fact our marriage is conditional on us trusting each other! We have faith in each other because each of us is faithful.

Imagine if Richard Dawkins said this about the faith we find in marriage:

Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.

Jesus' resurrection and history

Last week I took part in a debate hosted by the Atheist, Agnostic and Student Society at Murdoch University

Last week I took part in a debate hosted by the Atheist, Agnostic and Student Society at Murdoch University. I argued that God exists and gave historical evidence for Jesus' resurrection as my first reason for this belief. I explained that what historians look for in assessing historical claims is whether we have multiple, contemporary, independent accounts. On these criteria we have better evidence for Jesus' resurrection than we have for Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon or even for the life of Alexander the Great.

The story of gay marriage?

Paul Whitfield's blog

Same-sex marriage has become a heated debate in Australia. Currently Australian law defines marriage as 'the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of others, voluntarily entered into for life' but many Australians would like to see this change. As is the case in all disagreements, this debate presents an opportunity for communication, mutual understanding, compromise and growth (while at the same time threatening division, hostility and misrepresentation). The solution isn't to sweep the issue under the carpet but to engage in honest conversation.

Inception - 'You're waiting for a train...'

Paul Whitfield's blog

Whatever Christopher Nolan said in 'Inception', he certainly said it well

If Jesus saw our movies what would he say? 'Couldn't have said it better myself' or 'I want my money back!'
