Growing up, I always wanted to be a doctor. It seemed the perfect job- I imagined effortlessly waltzing in and out of hospitals, doing ward rounds with challenging cases, and ultimately saving lives.
In reality, medicine was not so sweet. Besides the gruelling hours, the medical failures, and the constant need to out preform one’s peers, there were so many different relational interactions, that conflict became inevitable. As I look back on my 30-year career, now working as a rheumatologist in private and public practice, I can see that I gained much wisdom from the Bible. Wisdom on how to do “good works” how to be God’s woman, before I was Dr so and so...!
We all need this wisdom, don’t we? So I am very pleased to be able to share what I’ve come to learn with you, at this CBF dinner on Conflict, Flight, Fight or ……..?
When I get asked in the church yard if I’m still practicing medicine, I answer yes, I’m still practicing- I know I don’t always get it right, in the same way as Christian women, we keep training in godliness, that is, practicing till Christ returns . While I actually do love being a rheumatologist, I’m equally keen on a good book, horse riding, beach walks with John and our dog, dinner with our 4 adult children, coffee with girlfriends and teaching the bible. I hope you’ll join us, do bring a friend, bring your questions and thoughts on conflict.
