As every season brings new and more devastating challenges to California, the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California cost the most lives and property damage in the state's history. Lizzie Johnson's nonfiction book, Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire, recounts the story of one bus driver's attempt to reunite 22 elementary school children stranded by the fire with their families as the flames spread.

Director Paul Greengrass (Jason Bourne) brings his immersive action style to this true-to-life account of a natural disaster event. Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar) embodies the flawed Kevin McKay, who is forced into heroism as he drives the 22 elementary school children out of danger. America Ferrera (Barbie) represents schoolteacher Mary Ludwig, who helps guide the bus out of the fire. Their harrowing experience takes them through some of the most daunting aspects of the disaster, exposing them to all sides of the human condition.

Unlike the action-adventure films that have defined his career, Greengrass uses his storytelling to convey this real-life catastrophe with convincing form. Yet, the cast manages to deliver the emotion and heartache needed to keep audiences engrossed throughout this terrifying journey. There are a few moments of respite as the bus traverses down the mountain, and viewers will be exhausted from the non-stop drama. Blumhouse, a production company renowned for its expertise in the horror genre, brings this story to life and adds the necessary tension to this tale of natural terror.

The Lost Bus taps into the emotional side of the human spirit as it strives to overcome the devastating effects of a natural disaster. A story that shows the brokenness of this world and how determination and hope can overcome the worst it can bring in this life.

Reel Dialogue: What can we really know about courage?

I can do all things through him who strengthens me. - The Apostle Paul

An underlying message of The Lost Bus is the notion of human courage. Some may come away with the idea that this is a man-made concept. People are confronted with opportunities, ideas and dreams, but many never take the step to achieve them. Hard work and investigation play a significant role in shaping life's decisions.

Still, there is always that moment when you have to take the courageous step to commit to the task. Something to consider is that courage is more than a heart issue for people, and an alternative might be that God has a plan for his creation to live courageously. The only stipulation is that we should live to his standard, not based on our preconceived notions.

Many view the Bible as a book of limitations and regulations, rather than seeing it as a guide for instruction and guidance. A guide to genuinely engaging with and getting the most out of the life that we have been given. Have you taken the time to read the instruction manual?

Passages on living courageously: Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 37:4, Psalm 90:12, Proverbs 27:1, Matthew 6:34, Philippians 4:13, John 10:10
