We work for someone greater
The transition from university to work is a big and exciting one. Goodbye assignments, tests, and exams, and hello paid work! Yet, the realities of work can catch some of us off-guard. Like caring for our teeth, sometimes we don't check-in till it’s too late. If we aren’t ready, we soon realise that work isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. Headstart is a place to check-in regularly so you can be ready to start your new season in life with a smile on your face.
With this in mind, City Bible Forum spoke to young worker, Ron, on what was the one thing he wished he knew when he graduated university.
We work for one who is greater
I was taught from a young age to get a good education, secure a stable job, buy a house, and so on. Even though I grew up knowing God and knew that He should be the aim of everything, it didn't always translate through to my career goals.
Before starting work, I thought my work would open up lots of opportunities, such as networking and making my name known, and I thought it would give me a focus and a purpose in life. However, when I started work, I was hit with how hard it can be.
I saw that work can be both the most satisfying and unsatisfying thing in the world. One day, I might be filled with a euphoria of helping out clients, completing difficult tasks, and solving problems. Other days, I would get negative feedback that makes me feel down, or my ideas are dismissed at a company meeting, and I soon found that networking wasn’t for me–I was already so tired from a day’s work to do anymore socialising.
Over time, I have also come to realise that our purpose is not the pursuit of endless ambition, but of something greater, and that’s Jesus.
Scripture says we are raised with Christ, so we are to set our hearts on the things above, and not on earthly things (Colossians 3:1-4).
As Christians, we must remind ourselves that our goal at work is not to be the very best, a maverick, or a pioneer. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to do our best, or pioneer a new idea, our hearts and our minds should always be set on God.
Our work doesn’t have to be our passion for us to be a good witness for Christ in the workplace. But instead, it is our passion of wanting to please God that motivates us to do our work well–and this is a beautiful testimony of Christ in our lives.
