Zoom Bible studies

How did a chance meeting lead to a Zoom Bible Study?

I first met Kathy 20 years ago at a traffic light, I was running a course on personal evangelism and just read how we could deliberately include God rather than censor him in our ordinary speech, perhaps by saying things like - “God-willing I’ll get that job I interviewed for”.

So the desire to talk about God was fresh in my mind. One day I was waiting at a traffic light and a woman commented “They’re nice flowers' ' pointing to the plants growing nearby.

“Yes, God has made some really nice flowers” I responded. What followed was each of us confessing we were Christian.

We next met more than 10 years later when Kathy was ushering at a City Bible Forum event at lunchtime. She told me she had retired from secretarial work at her financial company and I’d just finished Bible College and started working at CBF.

A few years ago Kathy visited me in the hospital. When I was finally discharged, I was walking wobbly and speaking very slowly and not very clearly. Kathy would visit me at home and we’d read a Bible passage her church or my church was looking at together.

After the COVID pandemic hit we moved our fortnightly meetings online using Zoom. These days we use questions from Bible Study Fellowship to help us in our conversations around obscure Old Testament books like Nahum.

How good is that and it started from including God in conversation rather than self-censoring him out with a stranger while waiting at a traffic light!

Let me leave you with one verse we’ve read recently:

“Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.” ‭‭Habakkuk‬ ‭3:2‬ ‭
