The Panic Room - Episode 26

The Naivety of Ricky Gervais
Wed 29 Apr 2020
Alt

Staunch atheist and comedian Ricky Gervais presents juvenile arguments against the existence of God. As someone who holds himself up as an intellectual, he fails to recognise or understand the centuries of philosophical and theological thought of those who've gone before him. See how you think his arguments stand up in this - one of our best conversations - the penultimate Panic Room episode!

A couple of thoughts - firstly, deeply disappointed with the lack of panic in the "panic room", far too many interesting conversations and comments and nowwhere near enough panic. Secondly, and more seriously, I was interested in Gervais' thoughts on society being responsible for developing moral standards. Until recently, "Western" society was deeply infused in Christianity and what he takes for right and wrong comes directly from God, and he might do well to reflect on that. Having spent time in godless countries (China, Saudi Arabia), I would not want those societies to define what is morally right and wrong, albeit for different reasons.

I planned on listening to this. Then I realized that if one side of the conversation is described upfront as naive and juvenile the only reason one would listen would be to reaffirm existing positions and feel smug about it while listening. No thanks.
