Stop and consider: Are you able to present the gospel message in a short and compelling way?
Romans 6:23 is a good verse to memorize as a short gospel presentation.
Firstly, 6:23 is an easy reference to recall—you just have to remember that 6 divided by 2 equals 3.
Secondly, the verse works symmetrically in explaining gospel truths:
For the wages of sin is death,
but the free gift of God is eternal life
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
You may want to draw it out like this:
Some things to highlight when explaining this verse
- A wage is something you earn or deserve, and a gift is something that you are given freely.
- Sin is not just breaking rules but dishonouring God—it’s a relational thing.
- The wages of sin (what we earn) is death. Explain that in the Bible death is more than physical—it is being separated from God’s goodness forever.
- There is a way to receive eternal life through a gift that God gave us.
- This gift is Christ Jesus. God sent Jesus into the world to die our death, and to get what we deserve. God then raised Jesus to be the Lord of all.
- We can receive this gift by praying a simple prayer, telling God that we accept his gift and committing to live with Jesus as our Lord. Invite the person to pray a prayer reflecting this.
This verse doesn’t say everything we want to say about the gospel, but it says a lot. It’s particularly good for people who think it’s possible to earn eternal life through works.
Action: Memorize Romans 6:23, practise drawing it out, and then try sharing it with someone.
