Headstart - Making the connection from uni to work

An interview with a Christian graduate

Jane is a young worker, working at one of the Brisbane Hospitals as an Occupational Therapist. Over the last couple of months, she has been able to join City Bible Forum’s online Headstart community. Here are some reflections from Jane about Headstart.

So, Jane, how did you find the transition from being a university student to a young worker?

I really struggled with the transition from uni to full time work. Not only did my lifestyle change, but my Christian community went from daily interactions to nearly nothing (physically at work anyway). Living out my faith as a young and inexperienced worker at the Redcliffe Hospital was challenging and not being able to physically attend City Bible Forum gatherings in the Brisbane CBD also limited my opportunities to meet other young workers and share in these experiences together.

What interested you in ‘coming along’ to Headstart?

I didn’t know what to expect when I first heard about Headstart, but the thought of being better equipped for the workplace was attractive. And thanks to COVID-19, this community of young Christian workers was and is now online and readily accessible to anyone working anywhere!

What are some of the things about Headstart that you have found helpful?

I’ve appreciated City Bible Forum staff speaking the gospel into obstacles that commonly arise in the workplace, like how we respond to stress & failure, and having the space for young workers to share, learn and grow in these challenges together. Along with being able to pray for God to soften hearts and open opportunities for the gospel to be shared with those in our workplace and life who are yet to know Him.

What has encouraged you the most?

It’s been encouraging to connect with others, in small break out groups, who can also empathise with the joys and challenges of standing out for Jesus and being able to pray together for God to transform how we live out our faith distinctively in the workplace.

I’m looking forward to reflecting on how sometimes our desire for more (work-life balance, evangelism, sense of security etc.) can actually leave us with less. Interesting, I know… so why not tune in with me?

Hope to see you online soon.
