Why evangelism needs self-reflection

My appetite for evangelism is linked to my level of well-being.
I don’t mean spiritual well-being, because that’s obvious. When I’m thankful and prayerful then living and speaking the Gospel just…flows.
I mean my mental and emotional well-being. Evangelism isn’t easy. It takes energy. I’ve noticed that when I’m busy or stressed (or both!) I make more assumptions. I’m less kind. I’m more transactional in relationships. I get consumed by the problem at hand.
And so that’s why self-reflection has been so valuable for my evangelism. By giving me the tools and means to process those experiences that generate stress, it’s been good for my well-being and resilience. I find myself with more energy to live and speak the Gospel.
But that’s not the only reason that self-reflection has been so valuable. And it’s not even the main one. The goal of a healthy self-reflection habit is to change and to become more like Jesus.
That’s ultimately why evangelism needs self-reflection. Can you imagine how becoming a closer imitation of Jesus would transform your life - and your evangelism?
