Ethics for the Non-Conformist
The Law Society of NSW
Level 2, 170 Phillip Street, Sydney
We're privileged to have Tony Payne speaking for us at our last City Legal for the year. He writes: 'In our confused and confusing world, moral values are at the same time very personal (in a ‘you do you’ kind of way), and intensely political and socially censorious. That is, if you are discovered to have expressed the ‘wrong' moral opinion, it can be the end of your reputation or even career.
We often feel caught between the desire to express our own personal possibly non-conformist values, and the recognition that morality is inevitably social and expressed in shared codes (whether in law or in The Sydney Morning Herald). The Christian tradition, from which the various confusing fragments of contemporary Western morality are (unknowingly) derived, offers a vision of ethics that is coherently individual and social, because it is anchored in the God who made us, and has redeemed us'.
Come along to the last City Legal of 2025 and find out how!
